Why Being Single During Christmas is the Best Present Ever

Review Weekly Staff

Both your Twitter or Facebook feed is probably flooded with articles directed at singles during this time of year. If you’re tired of reading headlines offering advice to those rolling solo like “How to Survive Being Single over the Holidays,” or “10 Worst Things About Being Alone at Christmas,” skip the pity party and take a shot. The truth is that Christmas is a holiday, and holidays are fun—who cares if you’re single? You get to skip the boring family functions or commitments to your partner’s family. Your BF or GF’s grumpy nana ain’t none of your business when you’re single—did you ever think of that? Also, feel free to relish in the pure joy of knowing you don’t have to be near screaming kids, you don’t have to buy your partner an expensive gift they’ll probably end up returning, and you don’t have to try to cram in two Christmases between multiple families. While these bonuses to being single during the Holidays are way more fun than slow-present opening, try out these yuletide tips for getting rowdy sans the significant other this season.

If You Can’t Beat ‘Em, Join ‘Em

You might be alone, but so are a ton of other people—even your closest friends, if you’re lucky. You can’t choose family, but you can choose your ride-or-die pals who have probably organized a rad Xmas rager for all those passing on the figgy pudding with the fam. Some people call these parties “Friendsmases” or “Orphan Parties.” And if you’re that bummed about not having a date, hanging out with your family won’t help that cause. Orphan parties are known to offer plenty of opportunities for meeting other sexy singles under the mistletoe. And, even if you do opt in for family time, swinging by an orphan party after Christmas dinner is always an option.

Holy night, Sure—Silent Night? No Way

Hit the club or your local dive bar. Despite what you might think, plenty of bars and nightclubs are open on Christmas day. It might seem depressing to rub elbows with the sappy sacks basking in the lonely glow of the neon beer lights, but finding a massive Christmas party might just get your mind off of your lonesome woes. Or, after you’re done with the family, why not grab some buddies and head out for a night on the town? Whether you’re up for a quiet drink or a wild night of dancing, there’s tons of stuff going on. It’s party season!

Merry Christmas to Me

If you don’t have family obligations, why not just kick back and relax? Despite the traditions, Christmas day is the perfect day for some “me-time”! Take a long bath, grab your PJs, stick a turkey in the oven and hit the couch. Finish that book that’s been sitting on your bedside table, binge watch Netflix, or queue up some Christmas movies with one of those giant popcorn tins (you know the ones!)

Take Someone Out for a Date

Catch the feels for someone and know that they’re alone on Christmas too? Make a move and ask ‘em out. Walking the city streets on Christmas Eve can be magical, definitely conducive to sweet, sweet love vibes. Often, the streets are deserted on Christmas day which can make it feel like you two are the last people on earth. Take a stroll or have a picnic in the park; it will definitely leave a lasting impression on your partner.

Say “Hey” to the Big Man Upstairs

Not religious? No problem. You don’t have to be Christian to celebrate or get down with the tradition of Christmas. Enjoy some carols by candlelight in a nearby chapel or church. Christmas services are great way to surround yourself with the warmth of others. Take a friend or go solo, make some new friends, or strike up a conversation with someone interesting. These are just a few ideas to help you have fun at Christmas when you’re not snuggled up with someone close. If anything, it’s a day to do with as you choose. Treat yo’ self.
