5 Best NYC Irish Pubs to Visit on St. Patrick’s Day

Angel M Rodriguez

Every year, as many as 150,000 people head into The Big Apple to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day and march in the NYC St. Patrick’s Day Parade. While it may not have the infamous notoriety of New Year’s Eve in NYC, it’s still a sight to be seen. New York City holds the record of the largest St. Paddy’s Day parade in the States, which should make this something worth adding to your “must do” list.

Since 1762, fourteen years BEFORE the signing of the Declaration of Independence, NYC residents have marched from Fifth Avenue all the way up to 79th street to celebrate the old patron Saint Patrick.

The parade wraps up around 5:00 p.m., but the celebration doesn’t stop there. Here are the top spots to continue your indulgence while celebrating this St. Paddy’s Day in NYC.

McSorley’s Old Ale House

15 East 7th Street

Phone: (212) 473-9148

McSorley’s was one of the last “Men Only” Irish pubs in New York City to reluctantly let women in after legally forced in 1970. The aged artwork and newspaper articles covering the walls, sawdust coating the floors and the Irish waiters and bartenders give McSorley’s an atmosphere that many consider reminiscent of “Old New York.” Since 1910, not a single piece of memorabilia has been removed from the walls. This gives the pub an authentic and old-timey atmosphere.

McSorley’s has been open for well over a century, so it’s seen more St. Patrick’s Days than most other pubs in NYC. Originally opening in 1854, this might possibly be THE most authentic Irish bar where you can pound your Irish Car Bombs.

O’Lunney’s Times Square Pub

Times Square at 145 West 45th Street (between Broadway and 6th Avenue)

Website: O’Lunney’s Times Square Pub

Phone: (212) 840-6688

You might get a little hungry after pounding a few brews, so head over to O’Lunney’s for some great authentic Irish food. You’ll find some great choices on the menu like bangers & mash with Irish style sausages. Sounds good, we know.

While eating, you don’t want to deprive yourself of having a drink or three. O’Lunney’s has a great selection of beers on draft: Guinness, Smithwicks, Harp and much more. The welcoming staff make it a wonderful atmosphere from the moment you step through the door.

If you’re just visiting NYC, you’ll be happy to know that this pub is surrounded by other great attractions. Times Square will be packed with people, so you never know who you might be kissing that night.
